Role and ResponsibilitiesThe Specimen Processor/Phlebotomist receives accessions, identifies, and labels specimens according to established protocol. This position may also be assigned to various other processing duties necessary to assure samples arrive at the analysis area ready for testing, assure requisitions are available for electronic review and storage, or enter financial information before the billing is processed. Also will perform venipunctures, skin punctures and other collection methods on patients according to phlebotomy protocol to obtain suitable specimens for accurate clinical results for patient diagnosis. Principle Accountabilities/ResponsibilitiesReceives accessions, identifies, and labels specimens according to established protocol to ensure all specimens are test-ready (defined as having the correct label attached and ready for all laboratory instrumentation to interpret patient data as well as test requested)Identifies problems that arise during the accessioning process and either resolves them or requests assistance from the team lead or other supervisory personnel.Understands the importance of accurate specimen identification; matches label and individual specimen identifiers every time.Operates specimen sorting equipment per established protocol; operation includes maintenance when assigned and troubleshooting errors as they arise.Performs phlebotomy and skin punctures and receives other biological fluids for clinical testing using established protocols to assure accurate patient diagnostic results.Performs clerical duties to receive, identify, accession, and process specimens using established protocols to facilitate timely and accurate test performance.Adheres to "Good Laboratory Practices" for waived testing including, but not limited to, Quality Control, record keeping, equipment maintenance, etc. Follows kit manufacturer's instructions on the package insert.Contributes to cost containment by appropriate utilization of supplies and accurate documentation of billing information.Qualifications and Education RequirementsHigh school graduate or equivalent. Excellent computer, data entry, and customer service skills required. Accurate minimum typing speed of 25 wpm required.Training as acquired in an approved Phlebotomy training program. Basic computer and telephone skills necessary.Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.High level of attention to detail with the ability to problem solve.Strong communication skills; both written and verbal.ExperienceSix months of previous lab experience is highly preferred.Knowledge and experience performing phlebotomy and skin punctures as normally acquired through a minimum of six (6) months experience.Licensure, Registration, CertificationASCP Certification Preferred. Valid driver's license and ability to meet insurance company requirements.Physical RequirementsWork requires some physical effort. Frequent walking, standing, sitting, and typing.
